On April 11, 2023, the Communication Department at Westfield State University hosted the Career Exploration Day, entitled “One Degree So Many Careers”, led by various faculty members. The event began at the Multipurpose Room in University Hall with several guest speakers, including Michael Connelly, an entrepreneur from Stand Out Trucks, and Kiana Lowe, a WSU alumnus who currently works for ESPN.

Students from four local schools (Holyoke High school, Springfield Sci-Tec, Westfield High School, and Springfield International Charter School) attended and toured the university’s Communication facilities to explore possible future careers. They experienced hands-on learning in the campus’s TV studio, radio station, the Voice campus newspaper, and even on the Campus Green where they learned about outdoor advertising strategies.

The groups engaged with current Westfield State faculty members from the Communication Department to see the academic department in real-time, as regular university classes were still in session.

No visit to campus would be complete without the opportunity to also experience campus life with a meal in the Dining Commons and a residence hall tour.

“One Degree…so Many Careers” was supported by the University’s Innovation Fund, a campus-wide effort to encourage innovative approaches to teaching, learning, and engaging with our community.
